The Old Tattoo

Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard. Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

(Leviticus 19:27-28).

Thought For Today:

I am amazed at the number of people who have tattoos. It seems that this trend has taken on a new meaning. Today, this practice of art has become a billion-dollar-a-year business. It not only reached men and women but the young and the old. Some do it to be distinct, while others try to fit into the fad of the times, not considering the hereafter. Most people who have tattoos will admit that they were not in the right state of mind when they got them. They were living in sin or in a state of sin. Either they got it while drunk or on drugs, or they allowed peer pressure to persuade them to get one. The Lord told Moses to write in the law, "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD." And you may say that was under the law. Remember that ceremonial law was done away with, but moral law carried over into the New Testament. If you are born again, the law is now to be written upon your heart so that you do not do wrong things. The most common excuse I believe I’ve ever heard is that someone got a tattoo in memory of a loved one but God said not to do it for the dead. As James admonishes us, "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren" (James 1:12-16). Keep yourself in the love of God, and your heart close to God.
